Dr Alison Evans was until recently Director of the Overseas Development Institute (ODI). She is an economist with extensive experience working in research, policy and evaluation and geographic experience in southern and eastern Africa, southeast Asia and the Balkans. Her career started teaching and researching at the University of Sussex. She later joined the World Bank, working in policy, country economics and evaluation. She joined ODI in 2006 as a Director of Programmes and became Executive Director in 2009, leading the organisation through one of its most rapid periods of growth and change. She stepped down as Director in April 2013. Currently working independently, Alison is a frequent advisor to senior decision makers across the bilateral and multilateral development system on issues of aid and development effectiveness. She is a Non-Executive Director of Oxford Policy Management (UK), vice-chair of the Board of Trustees of BBC Media Action, a member of the Danish External Grants Committee and a Board member of the North-South Institute in Ottawa, Canada.
