Briefing note: Parliamentary debate on the Timpson Review of school exclusion

Published: 16 September 2021

In 2019, the Timpson Review made a range of recommendations to Government, to better support children and young people at risk of exclusion. Many of those recommendations have not yet been implemented. At Social Finance we are part of a network of organisations called IntegratED; see our IntegratED Timpson Tracker to understand where progress has, or hasn’t, been made.

A debate took place in parliament on 16 September 2021 to discuss progress made against the Timpson Review recommendations. We shared this briefing with MPs to highlight three key recommendations that we know will make a difference to pupils at risk of exclusion post-pandemic. Our data analysis on the impact of Covid-19 on pupils in autumn 2020, highlighted the importance of these recommendations:

  1. Local authorities should drive multi-agency action
  2. We need better use of data and data sharing
  3. The Government should incentivise inclusion and reduce pressure on schools
